For authentic and inexpensive tapas, the Little Bar (Plaça d'Europa, 6; +34 669 96 87 09) is one of the most popular in Salou and frequented by locals (book in advance) and offers tapas in very generous portions.
El Trasto Taberna (Autovia Salou Tarragona 6 in front of the Flash Back nightclub; +34 977 35 12 24) is another of the more traditional tapas bars. Don't be put off by the busy road outside, and even if your kids are worried about unfamiliar food, they're sure to love the Catalan tomato bread here.
How to get around Salou with children
Salou is quite compact and you will find that you can walk to most places you want to go. There is also a tourist train that will take you through the center and also to PortAventura and some of the smaller coves on the outskirts. from the city.
A 24-hour ticket for the tourist bus costs €7 for adults and teenagers and €4 for children from 4 to 12 years old; family tickets (two adults and two children) cost €20.
There are regular buses along the coast to other beaches (such as Cambrils), as well as to Tarragona and Barcelona. Our children particularly enjoyed a ride along the boardwalk on electric scooters: bicycles are also a good way to get around (There are 27 km of cycle lanes in Salou, 9 km of which run along the coast).
Some advice for parents visiting Salou with children
- Even if you usually like to keep your kids in a routine, try to set your clock a bit later if you can. While you can easily get a good meal anytime here, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and entertainment are a bit later than you might be used to, Spanish-style. It is cooler at night and a good time to take a walk with your family, as are the locals. If you're lucky, your kids might sleep in later in the morning, too.
- It can get very hot in the middle of the day, so try to schedule some down time, perhaps sitting by the pool in the shade or a nap for younger children. Make sure everyone uses plenty of sunscreen when you're out and about too, not just when you're at the beach.
- If you have a bad weather day, Tarragona and Barcelona are good day trips and are easily accessible by public transport.
