An essential route: the Vía Verde
One of the most outstanding attractions of the Costa Dorada is the Vía Verde, an old train track that has been converted into a 21-kilometre long cycle path. This route will take us from the municipality of Benifallet to the mouth of the Ebro River, in the town of Tortosa.
Throughout the route, we will be able to enjoy spectacular landscapes, with views of the river and the surrounding mountains. In addition, we will be able to learn about the history of the region, visiting places such as the impressive iron bridge over the Ebro River, built in 1918.
Discover the most beautiful beaches
Another of the attractions of the Costa Dorada are its beaches, with crystal clear waters and golden sand. By bicycle, we will be able to tour the coast and discover small coves and hidden corners that do not appear in the tourist guides.
Some of the most beautiful beaches in the area are Playa de la Pineda, in Vila-seca, and Playa del Torn, in Hospitalet de l'Infant. Both have services for cyclists, such as bicycle parking and equipment rental.
Family bike route through Vila-seca
If you are looking for a more suitable bicycle route to go with the family, we recommend this route through Vila-seca. It travels through the bike lanes of the urbanizations of the Costa Dorada, so it is a safe path and suitable for everyone.
The starting point is the Calypso hotel in Cambrils, from where we will head towards Vila-seca and its hippodrome. Then, we will continue along the bike lane that takes us to the Port Aventura-Ferrari Land amusement park, one of the most famous theme parks in Spain.
We will be able to enjoy its attractions and shows before continuing on our way to Salou, one of the cities with the greatest tourist infrastructure in Catalonia. There, we can walk along its beautiful promenade, visit its shops and restaurants, or simply relax on its beaches.
In total, this route has a distance of 10 km, which at a relaxed pace can be done in about 45 minutes. It is a perfect route to enjoy with the family and discover the charms of the Costa Dorada by bicycle.
From the sea to the lighthouse
If you are looking for a simple but charming bicycle route, we recommend the route "From the sea to the lighthouse". This path runs along the bike paths of Miami Platja and Mont-roig del Camp, and is perfect for those looking for a quiet and picturesque route.
The route begins in Miami Platja and takes us through the hermitage of Verge de la Roca and the chapel of San Ramón de Mont-roig del Camp. The latter was a point of reference for sailors and fishermen in the area, due to its location on a deep red rock.
Continuing along the path, we will arrive at the Cambrils lighthouse, where we can enjoy impressive views of the sea and the coast.
In total, the distance of this route is 8.2 km, with a drop of 305 meters, which can be done in approximately one hour. It is an easy and accessible route for all levels of cyclists, and is perfect for those looking for a relaxing and scenic experience.
Do not miss this opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the Costa Dorada by bike. Dare to explore the path "From the sea to the lighthouse"!
From Salou to the end of the Ebro
The Ebro Delta deserves a separate report. But for now, we are going to write down this route from Salou to the entrance to this natural area, which thanks to its totally flat orography is ideal for effortless pedaling.
This route starts from Salou towards the south, with a flat profile until km 20, when it passes through L'Hospitalet de L'Infant and Miami Platja.
Then you do have to face a greater difference in level to Perelló, until at km 50 the slopes end and you enter the alluvial plain of the Ebro.
by the Priorat
This is a route that requires considerable effort. It is a 240 km circuit that can be done in stages of up to 4 days, where you have to organize the sections to avoid physical exhaustion, because you can reach a total difference in level of 4,150 meters.
This route borders the Parc Natural del Montsant y el Priorat, a land that produces excellent wines where there are also fantastic villages and monasteries with centuries of history.
Cistercian route by bike
The Cistercian Route is a challenge for lovers of mountain biking. It is a circular route that presents an unevenness of 2,300 meters and a total distance of 108 km, with steep slopes such as those of km 5 and km 27.
This route leads to the monasteries of Santes Creus, Poblet and Vallbona de les Monges, all belonging to the Cistercian order. The Cistercian route is an alternative to the GR-175 path designed for mountain bikers. However, due to its complexity, it is recommended to do it in three days.
The tour begins in Montblanc, a medieval city full of charm. From there, it heads towards Santes Creus, where the monastery of Santa María is located, an impressive place surrounded by nature and tranquility. Then, continue to the Poblet Monastery, another highlight of the tour, declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
After Poblet, you will reach the Monastery of Vallbona de les Monges, a place with great historical and cultural value. Finally, the route returns to Montblanc, passing by the spectacular castle of Milmanda.
Throughout the route, you can enjoy spectacular landscapes, full of nature and tranquility, but also certain physical challenges that will make cyclists feel more alive than ever. For this reason, it is recommended to bring good equipment and plan the stages well to enjoy the Cistercian route to the fullest.
